This intensive 24 hour class focuses on children with special needs, whose quality of life can be significantly improved through careful, regular massage. We incorporate material from the beginning class, and then, much attention is devoted to tailoring massage to specific disabilities. Issues around disability are covered as well. The success of this class depends upon the ability of the sponsoring organization to bring in children with a wide variety of disabilities.
Children will be evaluated in terms of their specific disability and personality, and massage is then fine-tuned for them. For example, a child with issues around sensory overload needs to be approached carefully in order to avoid over stimulation, whereas children who are in wheelchairs often benefit from a great deal of sensory stimulation. Having children return for 4 consecutive days allows us to evaluate their progress and expand on basic massage techniques.
